ABSTRACT:
The Special Section presented here by its Guest Editors, Jay F. Nunamaker Jr., Ralph H. Sprague, and Robert O. Briggs, brings into focus the role information technology (IT) and the systems built around it play in managing the complexity of the world that surrounds us. IT was born of the need to control the complexity of industrializing economies [1]. Reflexively, IT has been the enabler of the complexity and turbulence of modern societies, organizations, and individual lives. The papers of the Special Section direct their research attention at contemporary phenomena born of IT such as crowdsourcing, virtual worlds, and blogging. They contribute theories and empirical analyses that will help us to understand, structure, and develop information systems (IS) that will be in many cases radical departures from the past. The Guest Editors introduce the contribution of each of the papers to you.
The two papers in the general section of the issue study the effects of organizational IS. In the first, Arun Rai, Paul Brown, and Xinlin Tang frame theoretically and investigate empirically the impact of innovations in e‑procurement. Given the extent of disaggregation of organizational production processes, accompanied by outsourcing and offshoring of their components to process specialists and other sundry suppliers, the procurement function is crucial to the success---or lack thereof---of many firms. The research encompasses multiple types of major IT-based organizational initiatives and finds synergy among them; it also identifies the beneficial staging of the assimilation of these organizational innovations. Broadly framed, this work should impact the further research in the domain of organizational IT assimilation.
Now more than ever (well, especially now), the economic benefits expected from IS are questioned closely. The work of Nirup M. Menon, Ulku Yaylacicegi, and Asunur Cezar analyzes these benefits via modeling based on the multiyear empirics in the hospital environment. The authors find that IS deployed in the primary, clinical, activities have a different longitudinal impact from those used for supporting the administrative activities. Particularly in the short (two-year) run, the economic benefits of the two types of systems differ sharply. These dichotomous effects should be studied in other industries and, if confirmed to apply broadly, will alter our notions of IT-based productivity. The results certainly will serve those responsible for budgetary allocations.
